ITU launches ‘Ebola-Info-Sharing’ mobile application

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in Africa has launched the free mobile Application which helps them in against of the disease campaign Ebola. The application is named as Ebola Info Sharing App, which helps to communicate the talks and information about the Ebola Virus. The virus is continually spreading in Africa and other part of the world.

The “Ebola-Info-Sharing” mobile App enables coordination among organizations and individuals in responding to the Ebola predicament. The general public will also have the access to the latest Ebola news and info from the official sources. The app also includes the interactive map on Ebola.

The out-going Secretary-General, Hamadoun I. Touré of International Telecommunications Union said that Information and Communication Technologies are now critical apparatuses at the time of emergency. Telecommunication equipment not only helps when any natural disasters attack, but also during epidemics such as the now we are facing the Ebola disease outbreak.  “The “Ebola-Info-Sharing” App not only enhances prevention, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases but also strengthens healthcare systems through improvements in emergency response, healthcare practitioner support, healthcare surveillance and administration”, Toure stated.


According to the World Health Organization, till now total 17 908 cases of Ebola have been reported to date by the Ministries of Health of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. The outbreak has claimed over 6,373 lives, where the West Africa accounting for the majority of deaths.  It is believed that with more information passed across through applications, the disease could be shortening extremely.

The Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau, Brahima Sanou said with such unprecedented computing power in the palm of our hands it is imperative that we harness mobile technology to serve humanity and especially in combating epidemics.  “Partnerships are keys to the success of a collective global response to fight epidemics like Ebola”, he stated.

It is to be noted that currently App is available for Android mobile devices and will soon be available for iOS devices. ITU educated that the password-protected feature is designed for organizations involved in the Ebola reaction. The organization will be able to store and share useful contacts and participate in an interactive forum to discuss and exchange information.  The “Ebola-Info-Sharing” application has been custom-developed using ultra low bandwidth and has fully functioning offline mode. It is available in English and French.
